This advice comes from my personal experiences as a beginner and this is what I would tell my past self.

To come up with this list, I spent some time looking back at my earliest drawings and notes that I made in an effort to remember what I struggled with and what questions I had.

Tip 2- Follow a Video Tutorial

How do I know this works?  Because this is how I learned.  Even though I did not go to art school, I would never refer to myself as ‘self-taught’ because that would not be fair to the wonderful artists and teachers I discovered online.

This is easier than ever with platforms like Patreon!  When I was first starting, I watched hours of videos from Lisa Clough on YouTube.  When she started her Patreon account, I was one of the first to sign up. 

For such a small price, you can ‘skip the line’ and see exactly how your favorite drawings are created.  Learning the tips and techniques from an artist who has more experience can save you loads of time and frustration. 

And, as an added benefit, you can receive encouragement to keep going.  Watching a video tutorial makes you feel like you are not alone in this process.

You can combine what you learn from watching videos with books, blogs and magazines that give even more tips and ideas.

 And, finally, practice what you are learning.  So much of what you will hear in a video will not make any sense to you until you try it yourself.  Suddenly, it will all start to come together.  

This is more than a shameless plug for my art tutorials!  One of the main reasons I decided to start my own membership was because of my positive experience in learning this way.

There are many talented artist/instructors on YouTube and Patreon who create in different styles and mediums.
