Are your colored pencil drawing tutorials appropriate for beginners?
Yes! I love to work with beginners because you have such an excitement to get started and learn. I have many tip videos to walk you through my process and learn my techniques as well as drawing tutorial series done in real-time where you can watch me draw and draw along with me. You can post your drawings on the facebook group if you want to receive feedback from me and other members.
What if I want to learn more advanced colored pencil drawing techniques?
I have you covered as well! If you have worked in another medium and want to try colored pencils, you will definitely have an advantage. Or, if you have worked with colored pencils in the past and would like to try a different process or develop your own style, this is highly encouraged.
What drawing supplies will I need?
Pencils
I use a combination of Prismacolor Premiere, Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran d’Ache Luminance, Derwent Drawing, Derwent Lighfast, Lyra Rembrandt and Holbein Colored Pencils. I offer a Brand Translator Guide to help you choose substitute pencils when you don’t own the exact pencil I am using in a tutorial.
Paper
I primarily draw on Legion Rising Museum Mount, 2-ply, white. However, most of my tutorials can be drawn on any quality paper but Arches Hot Pressed Watercolor Paper, Strathmore Printmaking Paper, Legion Stonehenge and Strathmore Bristol Smooth papers are recommended.
Each drawing is different and a complete supply list and color chart is attached to each lesson.
Solvent
My process relies heavily on the use of solvent or paint thinner to dissolve the pencil pigment and create the paint-like appearance to my completed drawings. I offer several tip videos to teach you this process which is very easy to learn if you are interested. I also discuss other ways to blend including using a burnishing technique, blender pens and colorless markers for those who prefer not to use a solvent.
Miscellaneous Supplies
Of course, you will need a pencil sharpener, eraser, etc. Find out more about the supplies I use here:
